Hormone Testing

Hormone testing can be beneficial for both men and women. It is a great way to determine whether hormones are optimal or if there is an excess or deficiency. Hormone balance is very important for bone health, heart health, sleep, and many other functions within the body. A hormone test may be indicated if you have suffered from:

• Difficult weight loss
• Hypothyroidism
• Burnout
• Fatigue
• Poor sleep
• Low energy
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Infertility
• Low libido
• Perimenopause
• High Blood Pressure
• Cholesterol Issues
• Fibroids
• Endometriosis
• Acne
• And more…
• Menopause

How is the test performed?

The test is given as a take home kit to be performed first thing in the morning upon waking. This is the best time to get an accurate reading of the stress hormone cortisol. There is no blood required as the test is performed utilizing the persons saliva. The individual will “spit” into a tube to collect the sample.
All of the materials required for the test, including postage for shipping to the laboratory, is included within the package. Full instructions will be given upon administration of the test. The results will be returned to Dr. Laura within 7 – 10 business days and a follow-up consult will be scheduled to review the results and initiate treatment.

What Hormones are Tested?

The hormones that are tested are similar for men and women. These include estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, testosterone, and cortisol. Although it may seem confusing that a man should have estrogen tested, men can be affected by too much estrogen in instances of difficult weight loss and low libido issues.

Why saliva testing?

Saliva gives a reading of the level of hormones within the body and indicates how well the hormones are activated within the body. Some hormones might be present but are not functioning or binding as well as they should due to nutritional deficiencies, toxicities, or prolonged stress. Saliva is known to provide the most accurate reading of cortisol levels which improves the accuracy of the testing.
Unfortunately, blood hormones only provide total hormone levels, not active hormones. This means a functional deficiency may be present and missed.

Reliability of the Test

The samples are sent to an accredited laboratory in Canada. This means that the lab is overseen by College of Physicians and Surgeons, the same college that oversees Medical Doctors (MDs).
